Filling Up My Social Calendar….with weddings

So I started a conversation with a friend by saying ”it’s almost wedding season in Naija” some months ago and her response was ”when is it not wedding season in Naija?” Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know…when is it not wedding season in Naija? I can imagine you guys reading this and going “of course it’s always wedding season in Naija”…… that’s if you are familiar with with our favourite past time.

A few years ago, I had some non-naija friends experience our near obsession with weddings during a one month visit to Naija. In one weekend, they were invited to 3 separate weddings that were to hold on the same day. Their initial response was let’s select one we really need to attend and follow-up with gifts to the other two parties, but thank goodness their hostest quickly corrected their mistaken impression. She quickly pointed out that it wasn’t necessary for them to attend the said weddings on time if they were not the bride or groom, or part of the wedding train. Why attend one when you can attend three other events that needed your attention somewhere in the neighborhood? Ahhh those were the days fah! My weekend social calendar was usually filled with traditional engagements, church weddings, receptions, and thanksgiving services. All I had to do was go thru my invitations from friends and decide which ones I would accompany to their third cousin-four-times-removed party.

Then in walked the recession, and people started throwing invite only wedding parties! Invite only?!? Since when did Naija peeps start dis tin!!! I thought it took a village to raise a child and one to celebrate his/her marriage? Mmmh, they say you never know what you have till you miss it and in my case I really think I’m suffering from wedding withdrawals. Not that I don’t have people inviting me to weddings oh…but it’s just not the same. I should be grateful that I can now save money on asoebis and all those outfits, but hey this tin no easy at all!

All I can say is thank goodness for facebook! At least I don’t have to be invited to view pictures. Please don’t call me a facebook stalker ooo, I’m just treating myself with the next best free medicine for my condition.

Now I see why there’s possible jail time for hacking into a website. totally frustrating use of time trying to fix this mess. You may have noticed that someone hacked into our precious wedding website – fabnaija.com. Sorry we can’t be of help right now as you plan your wedding, but if you have specific questions, please e-mail editors@fabnaija.com and we’ll try to help.

We can still provide you with info for Nigerian vendors in the States even though you’re unable to get the info from the website for now. Wedding Day is Here….Maintaining Good Health

My first reaction when I was informed that my friend collapsed on her wedding day was to laugh but then I quickly got worried.

What is it that we do as ladies that makes us vulnerable during this period. Being in the health field, I do think this is a serious matter. If it is a simple loss of consciousness we know that most people come around but I am sure there are other forms of exhaustion that lead invariably to even greater mishaps hence the prompting or this discussions.

Diets: A lot of brides want to look their best and so go on a diet. Others believe that the running around for the wedding will help you drop a dress size or two so brides buy smaller only to realize days before that dress will not fit.

Exhaustion: I believe everyone knows what they can handle but somehow excitement seems to erase memory and makes people forget to delegate or even eat. Please do remember regular meals and exercise.

Do it all: if you must do it all yourself take the more sensible route. Give yourself time to plan, use easier methods were possible i.e. shop online and speak on the phone, send an email just conserve energy.

Resting the day before: It is hard but do rest the day before any big event. It makes your eyes and face prettier. It also helps tackle exhaustion.

Chronic Illnesses: if you have a chronic illness you may want to share with key people and ensure the wedding is planned in such a way you are not unnecessarily exposed to whatever will culminate in your getting hurt. Let some key people know so they can slip u the pill or know what to do if need arises.

Having done all these I still believe it pays to have the right people around you, so if eventually your knees begin to buckle they know they should be catching you and giving a sugary drink and letting in as much air as possible. I pray no one needs more.

Edikainkong Recipe

Edikainkong is one of the more difficult Nigerian recipes to master. The soup is the most popular recipe from the states of Akwa-Ibom and Cross river located in the south-eastern part of Nigeria. The major attraction to Edikainkong for most people is the fact that soup is eaten on special occasions and is usually filled with different types of meat.

Ingredients :

6 cups of pumpkin leaves, sliced4 cups spinach, sliced

4 tablespoons of ground crayfish

4 teaspoons of salt

5 cubes of maggi

2 lbs of beef

½ lbs of stock fish (broken) (clean with salt)

¼ lb Pre-boiled shrimp, no tail (optional)

¼ lb cow skin (optional)

¼ lb cow leg (optional)

Recipe :

1. Boil cow leg, cow skin, 2 teaspoons of salt, 2 cubes of maggi and boil for 15 minutes, or until tender. Drain water and keep apart.2. Steam stock fish on medium high heat with ½ cup of water 3 to 4 minutes till it creates flavor

3. Add beef, remaining salt, maggi and crayfish and boil till beef is almost tender, 10 minutes

4. Add pre-boiled shrimp, cow leg and cow skin, mix well, 10 minutes

5. Add pumpkin leaves, steam for 3 to 5 minutes until leaves are tender

6. Add spinach, mix in and steam for 2 to 3 minutes

7. Enjoy with pounded yam, eba, fufu, boiled yam or boiled white rice.

I had totally given up on our Naija movies refusing to pay them any attention but after a while of watching American I was offered some African movies from an Ardent watcher and I decided to try them out. I found them quite relaxing and for now I have kind of incorporated the Nigerian Movie ‘thingie’ into my entertainment. It is sad when I get five new ones and hate the half baked attempt at entertainment. I took a friends advice, ‘watch a really nice one after a terrible Nigerian movie it is the only way to remove the bad taste from your mouth’. I have hence watched a few. For this reason I will go ahead maybe not exactly rate the movies but just say if you wanted some Movies to relax with during your honey moon then try these. They are recommended not as honeymoon storylines but because they were as it were, well written, the scenes actually flow and they give an overall taste of good entertainment.

Figurine: Starring: Kunle Afolayan (Producer), Ramsey Noah

B+ for suspense and a wonderful story tracing two fresh graduate friends in Nigeria vying for the love of a classmate. The Youth Service Corp(NYSC) is actually as portrayed. Ramsey Noah at his best

B Ramsey Noah is in this one too. Totally gaining my respect and Nse Edom too. Shows how a man’s insecurities make him push the one he loves into the arms of another man.

Reloaded: Van Vicker, Uche Jumbo, Ini Edo, Desmond Elliot, Stephanie Okereke, Rita Dominic

C I think this movie tries to trace in the lives it follows, what makes a man cheat. Basically, man cheats, man gets caught

Entanglement: Desmond Elliot, Francis Duru, Yemi Blaq, Mercy Johnson, Uche Jumbo, Ngozi Ezeonu

C Wish they had left its title as entangled. The story actually flows. It traces church sisters as they go through the ups and many downs of their relationships with each other and the men in their lives.

Live to remember: Mercy Johnson, Ini Edo, Mike Ezurounye

C I love the palatable African scenes. No doubt it grabs you and takes you believably back home. A tale of two sisters’ that desire to stay together till death do them part. Mercy Johnson and Ini Edo are sisters whose parents are dead, thus driving their determination to stay together forever, even pushing them to marry the same man. Will it last?

A woman’s honor

C Many seem to love this movie. It is worth the time you give to see it. It is well acted. Tells you where a father’s heart should never go.

Sorry no rating at this time for poor movies(too many!!) maybe next time. If you do have a honeymoon to plan whether you are travelling or it would be a staycation, you could collect some of these while you shop. For your sake I hope to extend the list. See more reviews at www.fabnaija.com
